Pharmaceutical giant Pfizer Inc., after a year-long investigation, said it found more than $4.1 billion in U. S. sales in the first three months of the year, down from $5.3 billion in the same period a year earlier.
Pfizer said it has found new ways to expand its products by adding a new treatment to its existing range of medicines, including Viagra and the cholesterol-lowering drug Lipitor.
The move comes after a number of lawsuits filed by plaintiffs alleged Pfizer and other drugmakers were failing to warn consumers about the risks of using Viagra and other similar medications, a class-action lawsuit said Wednesday.
The lawsuits claimed Pfizer illegally marketed and sold a generic version of Viagra, known as sildenafil citrate, to the public. Under U. law, consumers can be entitled to compensation for medical expenses and lost income from drug use. Plaintiffs claim Pfizer and other drugmakers illegally marketed the drug sildenafil, which was found in a pill that Pfizer developed in late 2011.
Pfizer and other drugmakers were also ordered to stop using generic versions of sildenafil after a complaint by a group of plaintiffs against the maker of the impotence pill, which is used to treat erectile dysfunction. Some generic versions of the drug are not covered by the FDA because it does not include a warning about sexual side effects of sildenafil, the group of lawsuits said.
The complaint said Pfizer and other drugmakers hid the side effects of the drug in their studies of how the drug works and failed to warn consumers about the risks.
Pfizer said it has made an in-person meeting with physicians and other health care providers in person to discuss ways to minimize the risk of side effects. It also said the company is offering free medical consultations to all patients with any questions about Viagra or other similar medications.
Pfizer spokeswoman Jessica Ritchie said the company's decision to halt sales of Viagra came as Pfizer faced "greater scrutiny" from the Food and Drug Administration and other health authorities. She said the company had also been reviewing "other" medicines for similar side effects, including the cholesterol-lowering drug Lipitor, a cholesterol treatment.
Ritchie said Pfizer had also been "directly engaged" in the investigation. She noted that Pfizer is conducting an internal review of all drug makers and the FDA.
Ritchie said the company will continue to review the issue and will monitor the progress of the investigation.
She said the case is "a significant step forward in the pharmaceutical industry." She noted that the lawsuit was brought after Pfizer received a report in 2011 about a generic version of the drug that had not been included in the FDA's list of drugs that can interact adversely with sildenafil, the generic version of Viagra. The complaint said Pfizer did not disclose what other drugs it was marketing in the same way.
In a separate settlement, Pfizer said it agreed to pay $2.5 billion to consumers who purchased the drug from a generic manufacturer that had not made its own generic version of the drug. The settlement is expected to further boost Pfizer's profits and help it continue to make its drugs.

A Boots spokesperson said that the man affected by erectile dysfunction should buy the drug themselves wherever practically possible.
Men with severe heart problems, those at high risk of heart problems, liver failure, kidney failure, strokes or those taking certain other medicines, will still need to be prescribed the drug under the supervision of a doctor.
A four-pack of the tablets will cost £19.99 and an eight-pack £34.99.
Men who buy it will be advised that they can take a 50 mg tablet an hour before having sex, but should not use more than one pill a day.
Viagra is is already available as an NHS prescription free of charge for those eligible not to pay for their prescriptions.
